Earth Class – Year 2

This Autumn Term we will be learning lots of really exciting things. We understand the absolute importance of supporting everyone in settling back into school life.

During the first few weeks of term, we will be undertaking lots of activities to support children’s transition into Year 2.

PSHCE (personal, social, health, citizenship and economic education) sessions will encourage children to share about themselves and how best to work and play with their peers.

When looking at the ‘Zones of regulation’ we will be focussing on our emotions and how we can support ourselves in getting to a point where we feel ready to learn and play with our peers.

We will complete fine motor and handwriting activities to encourage children to strengthen their hands and to write for longer periods of time.

PE sessions will be on Wednesday with Mr Jenkins and Thursday with Miss Grant. Me Jenkins will be teaching the children about the ‘fundamental’ movements in PE such as throwing, catching, rolling, hitting, jumping, balancing etc. Miss Grant will be teaching fitness sessions to support their understanding of how to develop skills to improve their fitness and agility.

In Science, we will be looking at ‘animals including humans’ which will focus on aspects of health, hygiene, diet, the body, life cycles and food chains.

In English we will be starting with the book Then Colour Monster’, which explores emotions as colours. They will then move onto writing a story and poetry this term. As we prepare for their Phonics test (in Autumn 2) and SATS test towards the end of the year, we will continue to develop their spelling and grammar skills. Daily Phonics lessons will continue.

In Whole Class Reading, we will be looking at a range of stories that explore character emotions. Our first story is a metaphor for children’s time during lockdown and explores how both children and adults may have dealt with the difficult period of time. We will be practicing retrieval and inference skills as we are reading.

In Maths, we are focussing on many key place value skills, teaching mainly through very practical approaches. We want children to have a strong sense of number facts e.g number bonds to 10 and 20, odd and even, counting in steps of 1, 2, 10 and 5, adding and subtracting 1s and 10s and doubling and halving numbers.

I am always happy to speak to parents about how best to support your child. As we cannot speak at the gate in the morning or the afternoon as usual, please leave a message with the office and I will always endeavour to respond as quickly as I can.

Dear Children,

We hope you are all keeping well.

You will be continuing to learn at home for a few more weeks and we have added some new tasks to your daily learning sheets. Your reading tasks are a little bit different and you will need to read the story for the week to be able to complete the Reading and Writing Task.
