Pluto – Year 6
Welcome to Pluto class!
Miss Grant and Miss Winstone will be teaching Pluto class this term. In our class, the children have Mrs Costa and Mrs Hanifan supporting us with our work too.
Year 6 is a really important year for us all; we have lots of really exciting things happening during our last year at St Johns, as well as getting ready to move on to our Secondary Schools!
This half term we will be learning lots of new things. Our topic is Mexico and the Mayans; we will be finding out all about Mexico and the fascinating history of the Mayans. We will be using this as inspiration for some beautiful artwork this half term.
In English we have started a great new text called The Spiderwick Chronicles by Holly Black. We’ll be writing our own adventure stories. It would be fantastic for children to be exposed to a wide variety of literature to help to inspire their writing this half term. The Hobbit (J.R.R Tolkin), Harry Potter (J.K Rowling) and Clockwork (Phillip Pullman) are excellent, age appropriate texts to inspire adventure writers!
In Maths, we will be focussing on place value, addition and subtraction this half term. Please help children to continue to practise mental arithmetic skills, including times tables.
Our Science Topic this half term is electricity. We have a highly competitive ‘Dragon’s Den’ task to complete as part of our investigation work – we can’t wait to explore this topic!
As in previous years, children in Year 6 are welcome to bring fruit for a playtime snack. I will remind them to take this to the playground. We will also be learning Spanish once a week.
A few helpful reminders:
We have PE twice a week. Children must have their PE kit for both days – Monday and Wednesday.
Children must read and have their reading record signed every night. If this isn’t completed more than twice in a week then your child will miss playtime to read.
Homework is due in on Wednesday. I will mark it and return it on Thursday. If homework isn’t completed then children will be expected to complete it at playtime.
Please collect your child from the playground at the end of the day.
Thank you – we look forward to working with you this year!
