Earth Class – Year 2

Welcome to Earth Class!

My name is Ms Hanifin and I am your child’s class teacher. This year is an exciting and busy year for us and we are all so excited to get started. During the first few weeks of term, we will be undertaking lots of activities to support children’s transition into Year 2.

This term we will be focusing on two engaging and exciting topics: Flight and Homefront. Within Flight, we will be looking at the history of planes, hot air balloons and influential figures surrounding this topic. In Homefront we will be focusing on World War Two. We will be thinking about what life was like during this time and compare it to our own today.

We will be learning lots of new songs as part of our Charanga scheme and using our classroom instruments to go alongside this.

In English the story we are studying is ‘Meerkat Mail’. We will be learning this story using actions and creating our own versions of it.

In Maths, we will be practicing a range of skills including number, place value and money. We will also practice these skills for homework which will be available on google classroom each week – to access this, you will find your child’s username and password in their reading records. We want children to have a strong sense of number facts e.g number bonds to 10 and 20, counting in steps of 2, 5 and 10 and doubling and halving numbers.

Please ensure your child’s PE kit is in school each week. They will be sent home at the end of each half term to be washed and returned to school. Our PE day with Mr Slade (Sport’s Coach) is on Tuesday and we also have PE with Ms Hanifin on Thursdays.

Children must read each night and their reading record should be signed by an adult each day.

A spelling test will be done on Thursday for the spellings that have been set on the previous week’s homework.

Please ensure your child has a school water bottle which can be purchased by emailing the office, they will then add the purchase onto your ParentPay account.

Children will receive a piece of fruit each day at break time.

Thank-you for your ongoing support! We are delighted to be back and can’t wait for the year ahead.
