Mercury -Year 1

Welcome to Mercury Class!

My name is Miss Haylett, and I am your child’s class teacher. In our class, we have Miss Goodey supporting us with our work too. This year is an exciting and busy year for us.

In Topic, we are looking at a variety of History, Geography, Art and D&T topics. We will begin by looking at flight and studying the way in which it has changed from the past to the present. We will look at the history of the Wright Brothers and the impact they have made to flying today.

In English, we are going to be reading The Enormous Turnip. We will use this text to support our comprehension and reading skills and innovate this story to then write our own.

In Maths, we will be practicing a range of skills including number, shape, addition and subtraction. We will also practice these skills for homework which will be available on google classroom each week – to access this, you will find your child’s username and password in their reading records. We will also be practising counting in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s.

Please ensure your child’s PE kit is in school each week. They will be sent home at the end of each half term to be washed and returned to school for the beginning of the next half term. Our PE day with Mr Slade (Sport’s coach) is on Wednesday and PE with Ms Haylett is on Monday. As PE the first lesson of the day, children can come to school in their PE kit. They will need their normal school uniform in their bag to change into after the PE session.

Children must read each night and their reading record should be signed by an adult each day. If they do not have their reading record signed twice a week, they will be expected to stay in during their lunchtime on Friday to read.

Please ensure your child has a school water bottle which can be purchased at the office for £1. Children will receive a piece of fruit each day for break time.

Thank-you for your support! We are delighted to be back and can’t wait for the year ahead.
