Pluto – Year 6

Pluto Class is led by Mr. Jack, and our wonderful teaching assistants Mrs Costa and Ms Coad.

This is an exciting final term at St John Evangelist for the children.

This term, we will be studying the topic of Pentecost. Each Friday a prayer book will be sent home with an individual child, allowing them to take ownership of their faith as they write and articulate their own prayers. Children are encouraged to include prayers for those around the world suffering hardship.

During the first half of the summer term, we will be covering Scandinavia as our geography topic. This will involve studying the countries, climates and the comparison between nations in Scandinavia and the United Kingdom.  Children will use atlases and computers to help them with their studies.

In English, we will be writing our persuasive writing letter. This will be based on a short movie called ‘The Lighthouse’ which can be found on Literacy Shed. We will learn new grammatical concepts that relate to this topic to allow our imagination in writing to flourish, as well as helping us with our SATs. Our whole class reading book for the term is called ‘The Butterfly Lion’. This is a fantastic novel written by Michael Morpurgo. In reading, we will be covering a variety of fiction and non-fiction text types which include narrative, description and information reports. The children will be split into different groups in order to allow them to make further progress.

In Maths, we will continue to follow the White Rose scheme of work, initially learning about ratios, before covering topics which will assist in preparing the children for secondary school in the form of algebra and decimals. It is important that your child still continues to practice their times tables up to 12×12 regularly.

Science will be taught each week, with an aim to encourage inquisitive minds through investigation and experimentation of key concepts. This half term, we are looking forward to learning about ‘Healthy Bodies’ which will provide us with important information relating to our bodies and how we can look after ourselves properly.

In addition to this, foundation subjects will continue to be taught weekly. This includes ICT, in which we are studying basic coding in a website called Scratch.

A few helpful reminders:

We have PE twice a week on Monday and Wednesday.  Children must have their full PE kits on both days and bring them home at the end of the week to be washed.

Please follow the school’s policy on the correct uniform and PE kit. Please feel free to ask any questions regarding this.

Children need to bring their water bottle to school every day and ensure it is washed every evening. This must be clear and can be purchased from the school office.

Reading at home – children need to read for 20 minutes each night. Children will take home their weekly reading text on a Friday and can then chose a book from the class library the other days. If they are reading a chapter book they are not expected to change it every day. Children must read and have their reading record signed every night. In Pluto Class, children must write a comment about what they have read and then have the comment signed by an adult. If this isn’t completed more than twice in a week then your child will miss a playtime to read.

Homework will be updated once a week via Google Classroom on a Thursday (please let us know if you are unable to access this at home). Children will be given a homework book to complete the work in. This includes weekly spelling, which will be comprised of words related to the children’s core curriculum and our religious education topic. This then needs to be handed in by Wednesday and will be returned on Thursday.  If homework isn’t completed, then children will be expected to complete it at playtime.

Pluto Class should be collected from the KS2 playground at 3:15pm. If your child is able to walk home on their own, please inform the school office.

As always, please contact me if you have any concerns regarding your child over the next term, either by phoning or emailing the office.

Many thanks

Mr. Jack
