Pluto – Year 6
This class is led by Mr. Jack, and our wonderful teaching assistants Mrs. Costa and Miss Coad.
This is an exciting final year in St. John’s Evangelist for all of our children. We have the recent addition of a new ‘reading for pleasure’ area in our classroom.
This year, the children will deepen and develop their knowledge of Biblical scripture. We will begin the year by looking at St John the Evangelist, and then move onto the topic ‘Love’. We share collective act of worship in class three times a week and twice a week in assembly. Each Friday a prayer book will be sent home with an individual child, allowing them to take ownership of their faith as they write and articulate their own prayers. Children are encouraged to include prayers for those around the world suffering hardship.
During the first half of the autumn term, we will be covering ‘Our Local Area’ as our topic. This will be a combination of geography and history, as well as an exciting trip to the nearby Canal Museum. Children will use atlases and computers to help with their studies.
In English, we will be finishing the Harry Potter book which the children began last year. Our lessons are planned around this and we will complete a number of extended writing pieces. In reading, we will be covering a variety of fiction and non-fiction text types which include narrative, description and information reports. In grammar, we will be recapping punctuation and ways of using descriptive vocabulary to make our creative writing as interesting as possible.
In Maths, we will follow the White Rose scheme of work, initially revisiting place value – with numbers up to ten million, and the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division). It is important that your child is fluent in their times tables up to 12×12.
Science will be taught each week, with an aim to encourage inquisitive minds through investigation and experimentation of key concepts. This half term, we are looking forward to learning about ‘Electrical Circuits’.
In addition, the foundation subjects of music, Spanish, PHSE and PE will be taught weekly. We have enjoyed learning about ‘Zones of Regulation’ and actions which can benefit us when experiencing different stages of emotions which we will continue with this year.
A few helpful reminders:
We have PE twice a week on Tuesday and Thursday. Children must have their full PE kits on both days and bring them home at the end of the week to be washed.
Please follow the school’s policy on the correct uniform and PE kit. Please feel free to ask any questions regarding this.
Children need to bring their water bottle to school every day and ensure it is washed every evening. This must be clear and can be purchased from the school office.
Reading at home – children need to read for 20 minutes each night. Children will take home their weekly reading text on a Friday and can then chose a book from the class library the other days. If they are reading a chapter book they are not expected to change it every day. Children must read and have their reading record signed every night. In Pluto Class, children must write a comment about what they have read and then have the comment signed by an adult. If this isn’t completed more than twice in a week then your child will miss a playtime to read.
Homework will be updated once a week via Google Classroom on a Thursday (please let us know if you are unable to access this at home). Children will be given a homework book to complete the work in. This includes weekly spelling, which will be comprised of words related to the children’s core curriculum and our religious education topic. This then needs to be handed in by Wednesday and will be returned on Thursday. If homework isn’t completed, then children will be expected to complete it at playtime.
Pluto Class should be collected from the KS2 playground at 3:15pm. If your child is able to walk home on their own, please inform the school office.
As always, please contact me if you have any concerns regarding your child over the next term, either by phoning or emailing the office.
Many thanks
Mr. Jack
