St Aidan of Lindisfarne – Year 2
St Aidan of Lindisfarne Weekly Timetable
Welcome to St Aidan class! My name is Miss Campos; I am your child’s class teacher, and Miss Greene is our teaching assistant. We are looking forward to the year ahead. This term we will be learning lots!
In English, we will be following a scheme called ‘CUSP’. We will be covering a number of books over this term including Paddington. We will also look at character descriptions, narrative devices and formal invitations. Just before Christmas we will also be looking at stories from other cultures.
In Maths, we will initially be focusing on place value, solidifying the work they completed in Year 1. We will then move onto expanding our addition and subtraction abilities by adding & subtracting 10’s and 100’s. Finally, we will be introducing geometry looking at both 2D and 3D shapes.
Our two RE units this term are Creation & Covenant and Prophecy & Promise. This first topic focuses on the Creation story, caring for God’s world and the beauty of his creation. Children will consider how the world exists and how all that is came to be. The second topic focuses on the promise God gave to the world and the prophecy of Jesus’ coming, which will align with advent and the run up to Christmas.
In Science, children will first be investigating natural habitats. We will be looking at the differences between them and what sort of creatures exist in these different habitats, as well as how they are individually suited for their environments and the different types of food chains in this environments. This will lead nicely to the second half of this term where we will look at Animals including Humans. This part will focus on the basic needs of animals and looking at how things such as exercise, nutrition and hygiene are extremely important to humans.
We will be covering two topics this term. We will alternate the weeks that History and Geography are taught. Our History topic is ‘Events beyond living memory’; where we will explore two super exciting areas. Firstly, the Great Fire of London, investigating the cause and effect of the fire and the timeline of the events. Secondly, we will look at the History of Flight, including early attempts at flying and how flying has changed over the many years. Our Geography topic covers 2 smaller topics. Firstly, we will be looking at the physical geography in the local area, where will be using compasses and maps to understand locations and features on maps. Secondly we will be looking at the similarities and difference in two different geographies; which will be London and Nairobi. This will be approached using both a human and physical geography lens.
We will cover Art and Design in the first half term with a ‘Drawing’ unit. Pupils will be introduced to a range of drawing tools and the different materials they can draw on. As well as how music can influence the pieces of Art that they can create. Hopefully we can find some budding Da Vinci’s!
We will then move on to design and technology, with a unit called ‘Textiles’. During this unit we will look to develop our basic sewing skills looking to join different fabric shapes together using a template. This will be done by repurposing old clothes. After the half-term we will move onto ‘Painting’. We will we investigate how art can be used a method of expressing emotion, mood and feelings. We will be taking inspiration for the famous abstract artist Wassily Kandinsky. In the final few weeks before Christmas we will move onto ‘Food and nutrition’. Where will not only discuss the differences between healthy and processed food but also all the nutrients provided by vegetables and fruits. We will also prepare a range of salad vegetables and create and season a bread snack.
