St Joan of Arc – Year 4
St Joan of Arc Weekly Timetable
Welcome to St Joan of Arc class! We are delighted to welcome you to a new year in St Joan of Arc Class. Miss Johnson is the class teacher, supported by Mr Folan, our teaching assistant. We are looking forward to an exciting year of learning and discovery. We are committed to creating a happy, supportive and engaging classroom where every child feels valued, encouraged and able to achieve their very best.
In English, we will be following the CUSP curriculum, using rich and engaging texts to inspire our reading and writing. We will begin the year by exploring The Queen’s Nose, developing our understanding of characters, vocabulary and themes while strengthening our reading comprehension skills. The children will also explore persuasive writing and diary entries. Throughout our English lessons, we will develop vocabulary, sentence structure, punctuation and grammar, while encouraging children to communicate their ideas clearly and effectively.
In Maths, we will begin by developing a secure understanding of place value and building confidence when working with increasingly large numbers. We will then move on to addition and subtraction, developing efficient written and mental calculation strategies and encouraging children to explain and reason about their methods. Later in the term, we will explore multiplication and division, developing fluency with multiplication facts and applying these skills to mathematical problems. We will continue to develop reasoning, problem-solving and mathematical vocabulary throughout our learning.
Our RE unit this term is Creation and Covenant. Through this topic, the children will explore the story of Abraham and his relationship with God, focusing on Abraham’s trust and faith and God’s faithfulness to His covenant. We will explore key passages from the Bible and consider what they teach us about trusting God, keeping promises and having faith, even when we may not know what the future holds. The children will also reflect on how these messages can influence the way we live and treat others.
In Science, the children will be learning about Living Things and Their Habitats. They will explore how living things can be grouped and classified according to their characteristics and investigate the different habitats in which plants and animals live. They will also consider how environments can change and the impact this can have on living things. Through observation, classification and investigation, the children will develop their scientific enquiry skills and learn to use evidence to draw conclusions about the world around them.
We will alternate History and Geography each week. In History, we will explore Britain’s Settlement by the Anglo-Saxons and Scots. The children will learn why the Anglo-Saxons came to Britain and how their settlement influenced life in Britain. They will explore important events and individuals, examine historical evidence and develop their understanding of how Britain changed during this significant period.
In Geography, we will be learning about Rivers, Longitude and Latitude. The children will explore the journey of a river from its source to its mouth and learn about key features such as tributaries, meanders and estuaries. They will also learn how longitude and latitude are used to locate places around the world. Through maps, diagrams and practical activities, the children will develop their ability to interpret geographical information and describe locations accurately.
In Art, our first unit will focus on Drawing. The children will explore a range of drawing tools and techniques and experiment with different ways of making marks. They will investigate how changing pressure, direction and orientation can create different lines, textures and effects. We will then move on to Design and Technology, with a unit focusing on Food and Nutrition. The children will learn about healthy and balanced diets and explore how different ingredients contribute to a nutritious meal. They will develop practical skills in preparing and combining ingredients safely, while considering hygiene, nutrition and healthy food choices. The children will also have opportunities to design, make and evaluate their own food products.
We are incredibly excited about the year ahead and all the wonderful learning opportunities it will bring. We look forward to watching the children grow in confidence, independence and knowledge throughout the year and to celebrating their achievements along the way.
Helpful Reminders
PE will take place every Tuesday. Children will need a full PE kit consisting of a red T-shirt and navy shorts or leggings. Please ensure that all items are clearly labelled and kept in a PE bag.
Children will bring home a reading book and reading record and should read at home every evening for at least 15 minutes. We encourage children to read with an adult where possible, and adults are asked to write a brief comment and sign the reading record after each reading session. Reading records should be brought into school each morning so they can be checked and signed by a member of the class team.
Homework will be set every Thursday and should be completed and returned by the following Wednesday. Children should also bring a clear water bottle filled with fresh water to school each day. Please ensure that the bottle is clearly labelled with your child’s name.
