St Therese of Lisieux – Year 3
St Therese of Lisieux Weekly Timetable
Welcome to St. Therese Class!
My name is Ms Cole , and I am very excited to be teaching for the first time at St Johns’. Mrs Hanifan is our teaching assistant, and together we make up the team for teaching and learning in Year 3. We are very much looking forward to the year ahead and have lots of fun learning to do!
In English, we will be developing our confidence in composing and organising sentences so that they make sense. We will revisit important vocabulary such as nouns and develop our understanding of how punctuation can be used effectively, including full stops and exclamation marks. We will also continue to build our vocabulary, oracy and writing skills throughout our English learning.
In Maths, we will focus on place value, developing children’s understanding of the value of each digit and practising reading, writing, partitioning and comparing numbers up to 1,000. We will then move on to addition and subtraction, using mental and written methods, including column addition and subtraction with exchanging where necessary. Children will apply these skills to a range of reasoning and problem-solving activities.
Our RE unit this term is Creation and Covenant. This topic focuses on the Creation story, caring for God’s world and the beauty of His creation. Children will consider how the world exists and how all that is came to be. They will learn about the Christian belief that all that exists comes from God, the Creator, who Christians call Father, and that this belief is found in Scripture and the prayers of the Catholic Church.
Geography
Year 3 will develop their fieldwork and map skills, using maps, symbols, keys and compass directions to explore and describe places. They will learn about physical and human features of the environment and how these are connected.
Science – Rocks
Year 3 will learn about different types of rocks and their properties, including how rocks are formed and their different uses and purposes. They will investigate fossils and soils and explore how rocks change over time. Children will also develop their scientific vocabulary, using words such as sedimentary and igneous.
History – The Stone Age
In History, children will learn about what life was like in Britain during the Stone Age, including how people lived, hunted, gathered food and made tools and homes. They will explore how life changed from the Stone Age to the Bronze Age, using artefacts and evidence to understand how we know about the past.
Art – Drawing & Painting
Children will explore the drawing and painting techniques of Vincent van Gogh, experimenting with colour, line, texture and brushstrokes. They will be inspired by his artwork and will look forward to a trip to the National Gallery to see real paintings by Van Gogh.
Design & Technology – Textiles
Children will explore how textiles can be joined and decorated to create a useful product. They may design and make a simple fabric pouch, practising cutting, joining, stitching and decorating techniques.
Helpful Reminders
PE will take place on Wednesdays. Please remind your child of the importance of taking part in physical education and being prepared for their PE lesson. Children should bring their PE kit home every Friday so that it can be washed and returned to school on Monday. Please ensure that all items are clearly labelled.
Reading
Your child will bring home their reading record and a book to read every night. Children should read to an adult, and then write their own comment and the adult should sign the reading record. Children should be reading for at least 15 minutes each day. Reading records must be brought into school each morning, where they will be checked and signed by a member of the class team.
Homework
Homework will be set every Thursday and is due the following Wednesday.
Water Bottles
Your child needs to bring a clear water bottle filled with fresh water to school each day.
