St Justin de Jacobis – Year 5

St Justin de Jacobis Weekly Timetable

My name is Miss Nurse and I am your child’s class teacher. Mrs Douglas and Miss Coad are our teaching assistants. We are very much looking forward to the year ahead and all the exciting learning opportunities we have planned for the children.

English and Reading

In English and Reading, we will begin our learning through Shackleton’s Journey, exploring the incredible expedition and developing our vocabulary, comprehension and oracy skills. The children will then explore formal letters of application, learning how to use formal language and persuasive vocabulary to present themselves effectively. We will then move on to dialogue in narrative, before finishing the term with poetry. Throughout our English lessons, we will continue to develop the children’s confidence in speaking, listening, reading and writing.

Maths

In Maths, we will begin by focusing on place value. The children will develop their understanding of numbers up to 1,000,000, exploring the value of digits, comparing and ordering numbers and rounding. We will then move on to addition and subtraction, and multiplication.

Religious Education

Our RE unit this term is Creation and Covenant. The children will explore the story of Creation and consider the Christian belief that God is the Creator of all that exists. They will reflect on the beauty of God’s creation and our responsibility to care for the world. Children will explore Scripture and prayers of the Catholic Church and consider how our relationship with God influences the way we live and care for others and our world.

Science

In Science, our topic is Properties and Changes of Materials. The children will investigate and compare different materials and their properties, including hardness, solubility, transparency, conductivity and whether they respond to magnets.

History

Our History topic this term is Ancient Greece. We will travel back in time to explore the fascinating world of the Ancient Greeks. The children will develop their understanding of chronology and explore Ancient Greek beliefs, Athens and Sparta, the birth of democracy, theatre, myths and fables.

Geography

In Geography, we will be exploring World Countries, Biomes and Environmental Regions. The children will use maps, atlases and globes to locate countries across the world, with a particular focus on Europe, North America and South America. We will investigate different climate zones, biomes and vegetation belts, as well as important physical features such as rivers, mountains, volcanoes and earthquakes.

Art and Design/ Design and Technology

In Art and Design, we will be exploring drawing and painting. The children will experiment with a range of different materials, tools and techniques, developing their ability to create texture, tone, shape and detail. In Design and Technology, we will be exploring Food and Nutrition. The children will learn about different ingredients and consider the importance of a healthy and balanced diet. They will develop their practical skills by preparing and making food, while thinking carefully about ingredients, hygiene, safety and presentation.

Helpful Reminders

PE lessons will be on a Wednesday. Your child will need a full PE kit consisting of a red T-shirt and navy shorts/leggings, clearly labelled and kept in a PE bag.

This comment needs to be signed by a parent or guardian. Children should be reading for at least 15 minutes daily. Reading records must be brought into school in the morning where they will be checked and signed by a member of the class team.

Homework will be set every Thursday and is due the following Wednesday.

Your child needs a clear water bottle with fresh water daily.
