St Hilda – Year 1
Welcome to St Hilda Class! My name is Miss May; I am your child’s class teacher, and Mrs Hobden is our teaching assistant. We are looking forward to the year ahead. This term we will be learning lots!
In English, we will be following a scheme called ‘CUSP’. We will be building up our oracy skills, which will support us to compose, rehearse and record correctly punctuated sentences.
In Maths, we will be focusing on place value, building our confidence with number and then moving onto addition and subtraction. After this, we will move onto shape.
Our RE unit this term is Creation and Covenant. This topic focuses on the Creation story, caring for God’s world and the beauty of his creation. Children will consider how the world exists and how all that is came to be. They will learn about the Christian belief that all that exists comes from God, the Creator, who Christians call Father, and that this belief is found in Scripture and the prayers of the Catholic Church.
In Science, children will be investigating seasonal changes and weather. In this topic, we will learn how to observe changes across the four seasons and also observe and describe weather associated with the seasons and how day length varies. We will then move on to the ‘Plants, including Trees’. In this topic we will identify and name a variety of common wild and garden plants, including deciduous and evergreen trees and identify and describe the basic structure of a variety of common flowering plants, including trees.
We have two topics this term. We will alternate the weeks that history and geography are taught. Our history topic is ‘Changes within living memory’; where we will explore the order of events within living memory of the community to develop a sense of change over time. Our geography topic is ‘Continents, Oceans, Countries and Cities of the UK’. In this topic we will name and locate the world’s seven continents and five oceans and name, locate and identify characteristics of the four countries and capital cities of the United Kingdom and its surrounding seas.
We will cover Art and Design in the first half term with a ‘Drawing’ unit. Pupils will be introduced to a range of drawing tools and will learn how to make basic marks and will explore how changing the pressure and orientation of these marks can create different textures. We will then move on to design and technology, with a unit called ‘Mechanisms’. During this unit we will investigate how sliders work. Pupils will design and make their own card slider product. We will then go back to art and design for a ‘Painting’ unit. Pupils will explore making thick and thin paint marks on a range of surfaces. They will use primary colours and the dip, dip dab method of painting. Lastly, we will go back to design and technology for a unit on ‘Structures’. During this unit we will investigate what needs to be in place so that a structure can remain standing on its own. They will use a range of materials to explore and reason about why The Leaning Tower of Pisa some structures may fall.
