Maths
The subject leader for maths is Katie Daniels
At St John’s we aim to ensure pupils, of varied learning styles, can develop and confidently apply Maths skills which are vital in all parts of life.
Our goal for providing children with a Maths education is that they feel confident in being able to solve increasingly complex routine and non-routine problems by developing a clear and deep understanding of all aspects of the subject, exposure and a developed fluency of procedures and fundamentals in Maths and proficiency in their application, reasoning and use of mathematical vocabulary within the subject.

The National Curriculum 2014 is at the core of our Maths teaching. The National Curriculum provides an outline of the aims and objectives which should be covered at the different stages of the children’s education.
At St John’s we start every day with the practise of key number skills and multiplication facts (using Times Tables Rock Stars). Children then have a daily maths lesson which is planned using the White rose Scheme. In Years 4 and 5 children are also taught additional daily afternoon NCETM sessions and in Year 6 children have a daily arithmetic session. We provide a maths activity as part of weekly homework.
Throughout the school, we firmly believe in teaching using the concrete, pictorial and abstract approach (CPA), which we believe allows our curriculum to be accessible for all learners. We have invested in a number of physical resources to support our children with their concrete learning and use a variety of online tools such as White Rose digital tools and MathsBot to model with while we are teaching.
In EYFS children will have access to Maths activities every day and will also be supported by a daily 10 minutes teacher input.
In Key Stage 1, children will have the following:
- 1 hour Maths session 5 x per week
- 10 minute number session each morning
In Key Stage 2, children will have the following:
- 1 hour Maths session 5 x per week
- 10 minute times tables session each morning
