‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’ (Matthew 25:40) At St John Evangelist Catholic Primary School, children are taught the principles of Catholic Social Teaching found at the core of the Gospel. The principles are:
- Human Dignity
- Community & Participation
- Care for Creation
- Dignity in Work
- Option for the Poor
- Solidarity & Peace
During Autumn 2022, our focus is on Care for Creation. Children are learning about our call to stewardship and how they can better look after God’s Creation. The Eco-Team will take part in a project led by ‘The Garden Classroom’ with our Maamulaha network of schools. Sustainability Now! In November we will have a one day whole school takeover. All classes will have an assembly and follow up activities to complete during the day which throws the spotlight on sustainability in the school empowering children to make change and stick with it! Each class will have a visit from ‘The Garden Classroom’. Champ Camp: Our Eco-Team will join with the teams from our network schools as Sustainability Champions to form the Council for Sustainability. The children will get to meet each other and explore sustainability topics in hands-on, outdoor sessions at King Henry’s Walk Garden, N1. This will continue throughout the academic year. Caring Actions 2022 – 2023 On Friday 23rd September, children wore an item of ‘jeans’ clothing to raise money for Jeans for Genes Day. Caring Actions 2021 – 2022 In December, Faith Leaders led a collection using a ‘Reverse Advent Calendar‘. Throughout the month families donated food and household items which were donated to a local food bank at the end of the term. Families gave generously and the charity were incredibly grateful for the support.
During Lent, we raised money for CAFOD by taking part in CAFOD’s Walk for Hunger campaign. The children wore their sportiest clothes and throughout the day they stopped what they were doing to walk, run or skip to raise money.
Children also made thank you posters for the NHS and wrote letters to residents in our local residential care home. The children, staff, parents and all involved in the community of St John Evangelist Catholic School are here to serve. “Christ has no body now on earth but yours; no hands but yours; no feet but yours. Yours are the eyes through which the compassion of Christ must look out on the world. Yours are the feet with which He is to go about doing good. Yours are the hands with which He is to bless His people.” St Theresa of Avila
